Art on Campus
Encouraging student interaction with Public Art
Mission
Working closely with another designer, we created a leaflet and map for the University of Reading to celebrate the public art found on campus.

The leaflet was launched alongside four World Reimagined globe sculptures installed around the university.
Approach
Graphic design
Print design
User research
Content strategy
Brand guidelines application
Outcome
The final design balanced strict University guidelines with engaging and informative content. Over 6,500 copies were printed, helping students and visitors discover and appreciate public art on campus.
User
University students & staff
Campus visitors
Art enthusiasts
We developed four user personas to explore their lifestyles, frustrations, and journeys to the ‘Art on Campus’ trail. This research highlighted the need for a clear, accessible design, particularly for neurodivergent users and those with partial visual impairments. To address this, we carefully considered type size and tested multiple printed prototypes to ensure the leaflet worked for all users.
Inspired by maps at Tate Britain and Tate Modern, which the client identified as references, we began testing multiple folds and experimenting with layouts. Initially torn between a cross-fold and a three-fold leaflet, we suggested a cross-fold concertina format. After reviewing our sketches and prototypes, the client confirmed this as the preferred approach to develop further.
All photography featured in the leaflet was self-taken to ensure high quality. Touch-ups and lighting adjustments were completed in post-production using both Lightroom and Photoshop. It was important to capture the beauty of the globes, as the stories they tell are so significant.
We went through several iterations during the digital development process. A key challenge was accommodating copy and content changes mid-design, but by staying flexible and adapting, we created a solution that was ultimately more successful for both the user and the client.
The final design proved a huge success, distributed across the University and local community to guide readers through the University’s on-campus art collection. Printed on 150gsm recycled paper, the leaflet offered durability while also meeting the University’s sustainability guidelines.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive
Tommy and Amirah were consummate professionals, delivering an eye-catching and informative Public Art leaflet under tight deadlines. They were flexible with last-minute changes, maintained excellent communication, and ensured the design aligned with University branding while enhancing it for diverse audiences. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from staff, students, and the wider community.
